Frequently Asked Questions – Seniors

What days do you train and can I choose which to attend?

We have a range of training options throughout the week; you can pick and choose what you want to attend whenever suits you:

  • Tuesday and Thursday coached track sessions for sprinters, middle-distance and endurance runners, and field disciplines.
  • Saturday hill training in Greenwich for specific workout and off-road training (fortnightly).
  • Sunday informal group long run.

I’ve never been on a track before, can I join and will I keep up?

Yes, we welcome beginners to track. Many of our existing members first came to track with the Club in 2016/2017. Our coaches lead set workouts and split the runners according to abilities so you will be in a group suitable for your level.

I’ve competed in track events/road races/off-road races and take racing seriously, is this club suitable for me?

The Club includes an eclectic mix of athletes from sprinters, parkrunners, short and middle-distance road runners, marathon runners, even ultra-marathon and mountain runners! We regularly field winning teams in league races, our Women’s Cross Country Team were division winners in the 2016/2017 Metropolitan Cross Country League and a number of our members achieve Championship places in the London Marathon every year.

What races can I enter under London City Athletics Club and can I get a discounted entry?

You can register to run under the Club for any race around the world and our members regularly take part in races of all distances all over the world. All EA affiliated athletes (affiliation is included as part of full membership receive discounted race entry for all UKA licenced road and multi-terrain events.

We also compete as a Club for the following leagues in and around London:

  • Surrey Road League (May to August)
  • South East Athletics Association (SEAA) Cross Country and Road Races.
  • Metropolitan Cross Country League (September to February)

Do you cater for runners training for their first half-marathon and/or marathon?

We look to support all members for their races whatever their chosen discipline. We have a members-only Facebook group where members chat about up-coming races, arrange informal training runs and offer advice and support. We actively push for group training to provide members the benefits of a support network. We also have WhatsApp groups posted on the page that you are welcome to join.

Do you train all year round?

Yes we train outside all year round come rain or shine. We would only cancel a session in the event of dangerous conditions. We ask that you dress appropriately for the occasion.

Am I too old/too young?

Our minimum age for children is 8 years old and we have no maximum age. We ask all runners to consider their health and whether they are fit enough to run. If you have any concerns please refer to your medical practitioner.

How much does it cost?

Please refer to our membership page for a full breakdown.

What’s the difference between the types of membership?

Please refer to our membership page for a full breakdown.

I have never run before and never joined a club, am I good enough?

Absolutely! We are a friendly and inclusive club and welcome athletics of all abilities and experience. If you’re not sure if we’re the club for you, please come and join us for a free track session or a training run and decide for yourself before joining.

What do I wear to your training runs?

For training you can wear any running clothes that you are comfortable to train in; for the winter please consider something that will keep you warm and dry. There is no need to purchase spikes to run on the track – normal running trainers are fine. We have technical club kit that can be purchased on the online store and for races we love the team atmosphere of everyone wearing the official kit!

Do you have socials?

On the second Tuesday of every month we have a post-track pizza night in the Yellow House. After our club races we usually go to the pub for a few drinks and/or bite to eat.

We have organised many national and international trips for races, and always welcome suggestions on future group trips. Our past trips have included:
